Sophisticated vs. playful. This can be the simple distinction between Prada and its sister label, Miu Miu. Miuccia Prada, the powerhouse and head designer behind both companies, aims to distinguish the companies as two separate entities. She explains how “Prada has a distinct sophisticated style while Miu Miu represents a youthful, naive nature.” Although they are very different in their styles, models and branding overall, they have similar features in some aspects of both houses; specifically certain leather styles.
Prada uses gaufre leather as a way to show texture on its handbags. It is most often seen in nappa leather, as well as tessuto (nylon). The wave-like, gathered effect creates ruffles throughout the handbag and differs from other Prada styles and distinguishes itself from other Prada bags. It’s easy for the texture to be dressed up or down, either as a fancy chain clutch or a classic hobo!
Miu Miu Matelasse
Miu Miu was derived from Miuccia Prada’s family’s nickname for her, and is the younger, playful counterpart of Prada as it was launched in 1993. Miu Miu, although very different from Prada in most ways, has comparable gathered leather styles. Miu Miu has earned its signature look through the miniature weaving technique known as Matelasse leather. This brand allowed Miuccia Prada to bring out more avantgarde “fun” pieces to a newer brand, rather than adding on to Prada.
