We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Andrea Pion, of A Slice O’ Pi, to talk fashion, life in Brooklyn, and, of course, her pregnancy with twin boys. With her due date fast approaching, we wanted to know what she looks forward to the most, what advice she’d give other moms-to-be, and how her fashion choices have evolved in the last few months. Answers have been edited for clarity.
What are some of your biggest fears of becoming a mother?
My biggest fear was realized when I found out we were having twins! I never expected that news, as twins don’t run in my family, and I was terrified I wouldn’t be able to handle it all. Now that I have had some time to let the news sink in, I could not be more excited for our two boys. It's always been [my] dream to have a family, and I can't wait to experience it. Of course, I'm still nervous about all the unknowns, but that's what life is, you just need to roll with the punches!
How has your style changed while being pregnant?
How do you style your bump!
I had a love affair with high waisted denim - so long, jeans! My style is definitely more "comfortable" now, but I've learned to embrace the bump and have enjoyed finding pieces that really accentuate my new curves.
What are your top 3 pieces of advice for expecting mothers?
My top three pieces of advice for expecting mothers are:
- Build a supportive village - the quote "it takes a village" couldn't be more true when it comes to pregnancy! So, whether that's your partner, friends, or family - there’s no limit. Reach out to other expecting mothers, all of my best advice has come from other mothers!
- Don't say "no" to anyone's help. Learn to say, “YES!” I know for some it's hard to let go and you want to do it all yourself, but trust me - a little help goes a long way!
- Let go of all expectations. This goes from pregnancy to labor to postpartum. Our bodies are not just ours anymore. Don't compare yourself to other mothers and their pregnancies, we each go through our own unique journeys, and that’s ok. This goes from weight gain and how much you're able to work out to hormonal acne and whether or not you're able to breastfeed. Listen to your body and your needs and everything will be okay.
In addition, to my last two pieces of advice, I've been so nervous for labor. This is something else I've learned to embrace and let go of. I do not have a labor plan, and I am not going to create one. I feel like there are so many uncontrollable factors that can come into play, and I don't want to get overwhelmed or anxious if something doesn't go my way or according to plan.
What will be your go-to bag and why? Is it a chic diaper bag, or do you prefer other options?
My husband just surprised me with the Louis Vuitton Neverfull GM to use as a diaper bag, which I am so excited for. I have wanted this tote for years, just as an everyday staple, and it's already turned into my go-to bag.
What are you gifting this Mother’s Day and why? What do you yourself hope to get for Mother’s Day?
Both my mom and mother-in-law have been such a huge help with this pregnancy, so far. And, I know they'll be even more helpful when the babies arrive. Going through pregnancy alone, I realize even more so now, what a huge sacrifice they have done for us. So, now I want to do something extra special for Mother's Day for them. I haven't decided yet but I'm thinking a nice designer wallet with a written thank you note in the pocket and some flowers. As for myself, my husband’s gift to me (the Louis Vuitton Neverfull) was an early Mother's Day present. I also picked a piece of personalized jewelry with our sons’ initials and birthstones on it. I love personalized gifts. Other than that, all I look forward too is a fat stack of blueberry pancakes and some flowers! Haha!
