I’m a lover of all things understated. To say that I’ve been delighted with minimalism making its way back onto the runway and into our closets would be, well, an understatement. Being a stickler for detail, quality, and timelessness in my pieces, I would almost always gravitate towards the subdued and understated. My trend-fixated friends would roll their eyes at every “boring” piece I would invest in, only to later covet them once they actually looked for longer than a fleeting glance.
Don’t get me wrong, I love trends and their ever-changing natures. They keep me excited and nearly chomping at the bit after every fashion week. But those pieces that have lasted me through all these trends, and will continue to do so for many more to come… well there is where my true love lies.
So now I’ll just get right into my list of top timeless bags and, of course, the geniuses behind them.
Ashley and Mary Kate’s first RTW collection in 2006 consisted of a capsule of seven simple pieces, carried only by exclusive boutiques. Wanting the pieces to speak for themselves, the pair maintained very little association for the first three years. Since then, with several CFDA awards in tow (including Best Womenswear and Accessories Designer of the Year), we have seen some pretty incredible pieces over the last 10 years, including handbag pieces that tie their effortlessly cool and timelessly chic collections together.
Here’s a bag that won’t be vying for everyone’s attention. Quite the opposite, actually, with even the hardware staying subdued and tonal. The beautiful Italian leather, expert craftsmanship, rich colors, and genius functionality will speak for themselves.
Miss Philo’s takeover at Celine in 2008 was an unforgettable one. Having been influenced by 1990s minimalists like Helmut Lang and Jil Sander, she carried this aesthetic over into her new role and proceeded to resuscitate the brand back to its luxury roots. Her luggage bag immediately became the bag everyone had to have, whether through a waitlist or from one of the many retailers touting replicas. And even with all the global attention this one bag was garnering, the designer introduced yet another soon-to-be classic…
The look of the bag is so timeless, that you can’t help but wonder how no one else had done it before. But, sure enough, the perfect classic bag was created. And with so many variations of colors, sizes, and skins, you can find one that’s just right for you. This is another bag that will let the quality and detail speak for itself.
When Hedi Slimane first came over to Saint Laurent in 2012, there was a lot of speculation and uncertainty over the future of the brand. Well, since then, we’ve all seen the fashion house firmly secure its place in the luxury market, producing timeless yet unendingly-cool pieces.
SAC DE JOUR
A bag that’s effortlessly chic with no-nonsense practicality. Pick a size, pick a color; throw it over your shoulder, grab it by the handles; wear it out shopping, or wear it to the office. Slimane admittedly drew influence from the Birkin, creating its sleek and modern younger sister with this endlessly versatile piece.
Rachel Mansur and Floriana Gavriel debuted their first collection in 2012 and, before we could even say the words bucket bag, we found ourselves on the waiting list for one. The reason for the brand’s instant popularity? Aside from the accessible pricing, painstaking attention to detail, and gorgeous minimalist appeal, their limited production and marketing has allowed them to maintain exclusivity and up the coolness factor.
THE BUCKET BAG
The brand’s shining star; this bag needs little introduction or explanation. Perfect for day-to-day, uncomplicated, understated while still eye-catching, and impeccably constructed. This one’s guaranteed to be a strong addition to your chic-and-sleek handbag arsenal.
Though we’re entering yet another new chapter for this fashion house, there’s no denying that Riccardo Tisci left behind some outstanding pieces that will carry on his legacy after his 12 year residency. Injecting modernity and edge into the classic couture aesthetic, the timeless pieces he created will continue to stay in our rotation for many years to come.
With its clean and timeless design, this bag was created to be carried from your office to the weekend. Edgy yet classic, with all the subtle bells and whistles to help you organize and carry all your essentials.
It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that Hermes would make this list. We all know this iconic brand, since the brand entered the luxury handbag world in 1922, whose goods have been donned by royalty and celebrities alike.
Some would argue that this is THE perfect classic bag. Originally created for the jet-setting woman to be able to carry all of her things, this bag exudes luxury and class. Boasting of the longest waiting list of any accessory, the Birkin can take up to 6 years to acquire...the old-fashioned way, of course.
