Gucci 101:
The Ophidia Collection

By Koyaana R. Feb. 19, 2020

Reminiscent of vintage pieces, the Ophidia Collection

reimagines aspects of iconic bags from the brand’s past. Let’s review the Italian fashion house’s successful collection that is most recognized for its use of classic elements such as the GG canvas and red and green webbing.

History

Debuting in the Cruise 2018 collection, the Ophidia Collection gets its name from Greek origins, like several other Gucci collections such as the Dionysus. It can be identified by the dimpled pigskin style trim, the green and red web, and GG coated canvas, which are the hallmarks of this collection. However, what distinguishes them from their vintage counterparts is the use of the updated Double G insignia that, up until this release, was reserved for the Marmont Collection.

The Ophidia Collection is available in a plethora of silhouettes including the following:

Materials And Hardware

Currently, the collection primarily features GG canvas as the main body material, which gives the line its vintage feel when paired with its primary elements. When it was clear these pieces would be sticking around, Gucci decided to expand the materials it used to include leather, suede, and various printed canvases with options of embroidery and embellishments.

Interestingly, the hardware of the Ophidia Collection has changed since its inception. When it first debuted, the collection featured an enamel logo with the reimagined double G insignia, rather than the original mirrored G that adorns Gucci’s canvases. It was near identical to the original pieces save for the new GG. A couple of seasons later, the Ophidia Collection has been updated with the gold Marmont GG logo, and the enamel encapsulated version is rarely used.

Time will tell if this collection will remain a staple for the brand or if it will fade into the background. At the rate of its current success, we anticipate it will be sticking around for some time.
