Kim Jones Explores Dior’s American Travels Through Texan Travis Scott
By The Rebag Team, Jun 28, 2021
Dior Men’s Kim Jones partnered with Travis Scott for Spring 2022.
Kim Jones looked deep into the Dior archives to learn about his first travels to the United States in the late 1940s, which was when he landed in Texas. The state’s sprawling landscapes left a mark on the French designer, and some eight decades later, Jones revisited the occasion through a collection made in collaboration with Texas-born rapper Travis Scott.
Christian Dior first traveled to the United States as early as 1947. One of his first stops was Texas, and the landscapes of the Lone Star State left a lasting impression on the French couturier. For Spring 2022, Kim Jones revisited this legacy, partnering with Houston-born rapper Travis Scott. The two exchanged ideas for months.
They selected a color palette of soft pinks, greens, and browns that mirrored the landscape that caught Christian Dior’s attention so many years ago. Scott turned the beloved Saddle bag of the Galliano years and added a cowboy touch by doubling it up. The collection also featured shirts handpainted by artist George Condo, of which the proceeds will benefit young designers via Scott’s foundation for kids to attend Parsons.
Snake skin prints, the Dior Oblique motif, along with Scott’s spooky drawings of faces, covered the collection, which was also referenced their shared love for skateculture within the collection’s footwear. Although Scott was a departure from Jones’s usual artist collaborations that have included Daniel Arsham, KAWS, and Amoako Boafo, the rapper couldn’t have been more of a fitting choice; he’s a Gen Z icon, has and eye for fashion and is one of the label’s most influential clients.
