Bottega Veneta’s Daniel Lee asked, “What’s American?”

Following Bottega Veneta’s Salon 01 in London last year, and Salon 02 that followed in Berlin this spring, Bottega Veneta headed to Detroit to explore the culture of the Motor City. BV’s Spring/Summer 2022 runway included new interpretations of American sportswear, lots of BV’s signature color Parakeet Green — and of course, new handbags.

Daniel Lee decided to drop the standard fashion week schedule to present Bottega Veneta’s collections last fall during the pandemic when he decided to present Bottega Veneta Salon 01. He followed that by presenting the next season at Berlin’s storied nightclub Berghain last April for Bottega Veneta Salon 03 for Fall/Winter 2021. For Spring/Summer 2022, Lee set Salon 03 in Detroit.

Growing up in Leeds, England, Lee had an affinity for techno music. So it was only fitting for him to bring Bottega Veneta’s salon series to the actual birthplace of techno: Detroit, Michigan. Lee even had the founding fathers of techno in attendance; Carl Craig conceived of an installation for the show’s afterparty, and Moodymann scored the runway show. Held in the spectacular 1920s-era Michigan Theatre, an opulent space that was erected in the 1920s during the city’s automotive boom.

The collection showcased Lee’s interpretations of American sportswear; think tennis skirts, technical jackets, and relaxed silhouettes. There were even renditions of Marilyn Monroe’s famed white halter dresses à la The Seven Year Itch. The handbags, meanwhile, were minimal and clean with curved silhouettes and lots of parakeet —Bottega Veneta’s now-signature shade of green that came along since Lee’s 2019 start at the label. Scroll down to see the label’s Spring/Summer 2022 handbags.
