BALENCIAGA 101
The City Bag was designed by Nicolas Ghesquière, and introduced in 2001. At first, the bag did not impress Balenciaga executives who did not want to produce the bag for retail.
Ghesquière had a hard time taking no for an answer and got the executives to produce 25 City Bags. These bags were gifted to the models walking Balenciaga that season. Soon after, it became a global sensation.
The Balenciaga City bag is light and has a soft, slouchy silhouette despite its studs and tassels. It also comes in multiple colors, and goes by other names like the Lariat and Moto bag.
Kate Moss (pictured above) was one of the first models to be gifted the City bag. Other early 2000's "It" girls seen rocking the bag were Nicky Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie.
Recently, the early 2000s have been making a comeback and the iconic Balenciaga City Bag is no exception. The younger generation gravitates towards vintage styles.
Today, newer supermodels such as Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner (pictured above), as well as Amal Clooney carry the City Bag.
Because of its recent comeback, the Balenciaga City's retention value is sure to climb. Currently the City bags retain up to 79% of their retail value.
